The Vashon Tower Tour

Vashon Maury Island is located in Washington State, between Seattle and Tacoma, in the middle of the Puget Sound. Surrounded by Salt water the Island is a great location for AM Broadcast transmitter sites. There are no bridges to the Island. The only way to get there is by taking a short ferry ride across the water.

Vashon Maury Island is home to seven AM Broadcast Stations. Six 50,000 watt stations and one 5,000 watt station originate their signals from the Island full time

Tower Tour station Facts

  • KVI, KJR, KOMO and KIRO are the only stations still using their original call letters.
  • KGNW was originally KQIN.
  • KFNQ was originally KPTK > KING > KEVR
  • KTTH was originally KXA
  • KJR and KOMO used to share the same transmitter site on Harbor Island, before KOMO moved to Vashon in 1943. KJR Moved to Vashon in 2003 and shares (diplex) with KGNW from their site.
